A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors ★★★★★

Film #12 of Hoop-tober 2017

Horror sequels don't have a great track record, but occasionally you get an absolute gem. Dream Warriors is practically a greatest hits of the 80's: a breakfast club of sorts, outrageous practical effects, dungeons and dragons, switchblade punks and an appropriately excessive synth score (oh Angelo).

It turns out when your sequel predictably turns things to 11, the results can be magnificent when the central hook of your movie is so imaginative. Not a single set-piece didn't work for me, and there's an absolute ton of visual creativity flowing off the screen. It also has one of the best uses of a returning final girl I've seen, having her not just as a death cameo, but as a rock to guide and empower the other teens who are, once again, surrounded by clueless adults.

And featuring a young Laurence Fishburne in a film with the line "You die in there, you die in the real world".
