Very powerful short. Directing is incredibly strong throughout, drawing your eye to the right places and feeling unique without ever being too showy or short-filmy. Was initially a little more apprehensive with the writing as it felt quite blunt and after school special moralising, but once the setup is established things get much deeper. A great calling card of a short that refreshingly doesn't feel like it's trying to sell you on a narrative feature, I'm hoping Mitch Kalisa goes on to bigger things from this.

debbie tucker green is an absolute genius. The only problem with this is that it may be just too much and too dense to be comprehensible on film. A lot of the reviews here criticise how stagey the film feels and I completely agree, but I think the main reason that is so noticeable is that the performances are so raw and the dialogue is so rich and complex that it almost feels like you need to be in the…

I should clarify right at the start of this that Ain't Them Bodies Saints is probably my least favourite film I've seen this year. It gets two stars because that's what I give offensively boring films. It doesn't get one-and-a-half stars because that's what I give offensively stupid films (Gangster Squad, The Lifeguard) and it doesn't get one star because that's what I give just downright badly-made films (Charles Swan III), but I had more fun watching any of the…
