Such a nakedly revealing and devastating depiction of poverty in America, but also one woman's unwavering spirit and perseverance. It's unrelentingly forlorn and almost entirely devoid of authentic hope. Reichardt has a mesmerizing knack for capturing life in its simplest and rawest form. She has no need for embellishments. This is such a heartbreaking movie; I can't begin to imagine how I'd have reacted if Lucy was a cat instead.
