After surviving a massacre and being in a coma for four years, a former assassin seeks vengeance on the responsible parties. Not Quentin Tarantino’s best, for me it has too much style over substance, but it’s still a nice homage to Asian cinema.
Another miss from Guillermo Del Toro. Along with Three Billboards this is one of the most overrated films of the year. Pan's Labyrinth & Crimson Peak were much better than this wannabe 1960's Jean-Pierre Jeunet meets Tim Burton knock off. Feels like it was made by a teenager obsessed with sex and violence that's trapped in the body of a middle-aged man who still believes in fairy tales.
The friendship between a teen-age boy and a heart surgeon slowly begins to unravel its sinister motives. An interesting film that combines the techniques of three legendary directors: the visuals of Stanley Kubrick, the deadpan acting of Robert Bresson and the surrealness of Luis Buñuel. After his excellent English language debut of The Lobster, Yorgos Lanthimos does it again.
