A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge 1985
all the Freddy reboots and we still haven’t gotten a remake of this by a fa**** with a vision!!! but maybe it exists best as a time capsule of the closet in the mid 80s

Thief 1981
I love noir and crime thrillers because they’re soully aligned with queer narratives. Outside forces and your human nature constantly betraying your attempts at domesticity and tranquility. I knew Frank would never get to keep the house, the girl, or the child, try as he might. This spoke to me as a WGA writer currently on strike who wants to burn it all down and a gay man who often wants to burn down the increasingly capitalism of queer life…

I Shot Andy Warhol 1996
Lili Taylor does amazing work in this, as sublime as Christian Bale’s work in Mary Harron’s masterpiece American Psycho. Andy Warhol isn’t so much an adversary as Solanas’ obsession with him, so he’s not particularly compelling to watch by design… tbh I’ve seen very few interesting portrayals of Warhol. Maybe also the point.

The Zone of Interest 2023
There are many things I admire about this film including how it manages a Brecht-like sense of alienation while also being grossly voyeuristic. But I’m not particularly interested in the story. Is it the point that the film lingers long beyond we’ve come to understand its thematic intent? It’s a success in that respect, I suppose, but I don’t think this film is particularly interested in asking any new questions. It felt like a project in construction and in the act of watching it.

The Color Purple 2023
Danielle Brooks is the mother I never had, she is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don’t know a better Best Supporting Actress contender!!!

Priscilla 2023
I wanted to gag. I didn’t gag! Sofia is so totally suited for this film and she captures so many moments of obsessive teenage love and the overwrought emotions that come with it along with the casual complicity of adults in Priscilla’s entrapment by Elvis. The film works when it’s claustrophobic, when it attempts to place its heroine within the world of a woman who’s now in the orbit of a superstar it doesn’t. It’s also an incredibly drab film…
