Turn the audience into detectives.
"Knives Out" is the pleasant proof that risk-taking can be a key factor for commercial success after all. Because who would have thought that a board game adaptation of Cluedo would go down so well. With a sense of dry humour and suspense, the enemy image of all chronically discontented Star Wars fans, Rian Johnson, shakes a digestible, elegant Agatha Christie-Whodunit out of his confident sleeve, as smart as it is fresh and modern.
Kenneth Branagh (see his smug Murder on the Orient Express film) can cut a fat slice of esprit from this.
