Rocketman ★★★

ADDED TO "2019 RANKED" :)

Moments of soaring fantasy scattered throughout a fairly generic biopic, but the former is dazzling enough and the latter is competent enough to make for a fun and respectable movie. Rocketman’s script is rough — relying on a tired framing device, rushing through important events and messily ditching then reinstating characters — but offers plenty of potential to the cast and crew, most of which is seized. Dexter Fletcher doesn’t always muster the required energy and elegance for some scenes (the first few numbers are quite awkward), but does a fantastic job with others (hazy drug benders, red-soaked orgies and the floating Crocodile Rock, which made me feel like I was levitating too). At least twice the quality of Bohemian Rhapsody, so about a 6.5/10
