    Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Very whelmed. The Pokemon were cool looking but the type of realism they went for wasn't always as effective as I'd hope. I mostly spent my time wincing about the dialogue and wondering which Pokemon I'd see next, if I'd know what tf it was, and how they decided to make it look.

And, since nobody should come in expecting a mind-blowing story, that's really the only reason to watch this movie.

Solid modernization with fantastic CGI and a great cast. I loved hearing John Kani speaking Xhosa and Timon and Pumbaa were really fun. They actually packed a lot of expression into realistic models of animals, people are just upset it's not a cartoon.

There's a horrendous irony in people getting tied up in personal nostalgia over a movie that's literally about moving on from the past and being your own person. This is a great time.

Great concept, great execution. I've likened this to a best-case scenario of a Call of Cthulhu or other "real world" type RPG where you ask players to come up with their own interesting character with a reason to be in this place.

Fantastic cast doing fantastic work, and great camera and sound work. Even when you think you know what's happening, it all changes the next scene, and you realize all you need to know is what was in front of you. I absolutely loved it.

  • Midsommar

God, men are such goddamn trash.

And entitled, apathetic, selfish, straight white dudes are even worse.

This is an exercise in discomfort. If Hereditary is the film equivalent of a panic attack mixed with family trauma, Midsommar is the harrowing epitome of abusive relationships and trauma/grieving, as well as systemic patriarchy and misogyny.

Aster just knows dread, man. It lingers the whole time. You know bad shit's going to happen, and you feel terrible, but you can't look away because…
