I expected emotional baggage and unresolved family trauma, especially when it featured a culture that I'm all familiar with too well (I'm ethnically Chinese after all), and I got that and more. The animation was just so beautifully AND respectfully done, with very fine details done so well and proper as it should be. Culturally, it was as accurately as I hoped for: filial piety is part of being Chinese after all. Domee Shi has done it again.

    Also, can…

It's a very slow burn at first, but it proves a very worthy wait if you stick all the way till the end. Personally, I'm usually not a big Western person, but this one felt different than the others, and I was proven right.

The acting in the film was marvelous, including Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kirsten Dunst, and Benedict Cumberbatch's performances. I'm most surprised by Jesse Plemons, as I'm used to him portraying the antagonist, so it's quite refreshing to see…

Rewatching after this film winning Best Picture hits different yet I still cry at the most soul-crushing points of the film.

I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this film a lot. I truly did, but unfortunately something was missing. I truly thought the glue that held everything together was lost in this, and losing Chadwick Boseman was probably one of the major reasons why it felt somewhat empty even with all the emotional scenes. Also, the length of the film, though justified by the mourning of Chadwick Boseman, was a bit too long and I noticed myself checking on the…

    Predictable? Yes. Fun anyway? Absolutely.

The Hannah Waddingham supporting character was gold and I wished I saw more of her, but nevertheless I found it to be very enjoyable. Definitely was singing along with some of the musical numbers too. The Sanderson sisters were everything and more, and frankly this was a sequel done well.

The younger cast were also equally cool, and frankly I live for the multiple queer references made throughout the film. (Disney, seriously, it's okay to say gay).

Yeah this one felt like a miss to me. Visuals were great, voice acting was fine, but the story felt like nothing new or refreshing. Definitely one of the weaker Disney films, not unlike Lightyear. It seemed like Disney just jumbled all sorts of ideas yet ended up not truly focusing on a single theme. Not surprised it tanked at the box office.
