Queer Film Challenge #2
31. A controversial queer film.
Ugh. The protagonist is a rapist and a creep, every woman is not to be trusted and bisexuality is for the pleasure of het men. Not to mention the entirely sex-negative attitude of the film. There is nothing subversive or intriguing about this for me, it is just misogynist trash with some good acting.
This movie was so racist and I can't believe no one is talking about it.
Default white girl lead? Check.
Blaming every problem on misogyny whilst mostly ignoring intersecting identities such as race (and ableism and class etc)? Check.
Stereotypical Asian mom speaking in unsubtitled Chinese and slut-shaming her daughter when every other parent was Big Woque? Check.
Appropriating revolutionary feminist aesthetics in service of a white liberal story? Check. (of course they threw in one brief criticism of whiteness, learn from your own message)
I was buzzing to watch this but it was assimilationist Z-tier Booksmart.
Tacky, boring melodrama of the worst kind. This film is "camp" in the same way that corporations "do LGBT activism" during Pride Month.
I thought the acting was terrible across the board with the (unfortunate, because he's a creep and I hate him) exception of Jared Leto. I love Gaga, but the scene outside her daughter's school is some of the worst acting I've ever seen in a prestige drama.
Every accent is bad in a different way. Gaga's is…
