Valhalla rising is a true enigma of filmmaking. An extremely captivating and miserable film that flows with both grace and violent-flare. While it beautifully captures landscapes and nature, it uses these elements to create a deeply psychological experience from the perspective of its characters and with how it plays with its audience.
Saltburn is a film that fails to be absolutely anything of substance and value. A deplorable, cruel film that lacks in providing anything of nuance. I find it very difficult to enjoy a film filled with shock and controversy if it isn’t held up with a sincere thematic purpose and message. If you are showcasing self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse etc it’s not just useful, but necessary for there to be purpose beyond shock-value. Otherwise a film is no better…
