Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★★

It’s rare I have the opportunity to go into a film completely blind, not knowing the plot of the film or the history behind it, not knowing what moments to pay attention to, seeing it before the embargo.

Thank god for Sundance.

This is a film that I will never forget. The performances are uniformly great, with Dominique Fishback standing out as the emotional core, but none of the film works with anyone besides Shaka King behind the camera. A masterstroke of cinema, this is THE film of the year. Like last years Sundance darling Promising Young Woman, this is an unabashed film that never apologizes for its beliefs and pushes those beliefs through abrasive editing, a cutting jazz score, and fiery performances.
