Nightcrawler ★★½

Partially a critique of news coverage and partially a character study, both felt fairly obvious and uninspiring to me.

Gyllenhaal does give his all as Lou, a slimy character looking for work in Los Angeles who discovers he can make money off of filming crimes for news stations. He is at best socially awkward and at worst a sociopath, but for me I felt like I got it very quickly, everything he does and says weren't particularly surprising or all that interesting.

The film does go to some compelling places and it certainly is well put together, but upon first viewing there doesn't seem to be much there under the surface. These are just quick reflections after having just seen it, but I can't imagine it growing in my estimation.
