This felt like it was trying too hard to be shot in a different way and be deep. It completely missed the impact it could’ve had. I think this story also shouldn’t be spun out over almost 80 minutes, a short would’ve been better and the repetitiveness wouldn’t have annoyed me.
I can’t say I got very bored, but this wasn’t exciting either and I think it could’ve been. I also feel like there’s something this movie wants to say, but because of its length it completely loses track of where it wants to go and even gets completely lost a few times. The performances were good, but also not something I will remember.
Der Hauptmann is no easy watch. Everything from the dark humor to the soundtrack makes this one of the most suffocating movies I have seen. Because of that it leaves a very strong impression and gives a lot of food for thought. And I guess that is something all of the moviegoers felt up to a certain level, because nobody said a word after the end credits had rolled (those end credits are great BTW).
Der Hauptmann is about power…
Edit after a week or something: I needed to give this a 3,5 star rating instead of a 3 after a week of thinking back to it and remembering a whole lot, this is just way to memorable for a 3 star watch. I will rewatch it soon and hope I’ll have to write an apology for not seeing it’s geniusness the first time around. Or I will fall asleep for real... that’s also a possibility.
Do I admire Mitchell…
