Cruella ★★

Feels like it's trying too hard to be edgy despite being neutered by the Disney branding and these core aspects through most of the film are often coming at odds with one another. It seems intent on being a dark comedy separate from most other live action remakes, which already sets in stone the idea that a great movie could be made from Cruella de Vil's origin story, but Cruella just seems to reek from the fact that its supposedly punk aesthetic is clearly derivative without ever crossing that line, because it's afraid of alienating the children watching.

If Disney wants to go for a PG-13, they may as well try and take advantage of that rather than playing it safe. The costumes are nice, and Emma Stone is entertaining in the title role, but it's just so dull. There's absolutely no reason for this to be over two hours long.
