rare case where i read negative reviews and it just washes over me. happy for you or sorry that happened! i was simply fully engrossed from start to finish, enjoying the slow burn and feeling like every performer was putting in amazing work, every craftsperson delivering, just a great damn time at the freakin movies! speaking of, sure glad i didn't watch this on netflix! wow!
it would feel like an oddly upbeat ending, until you remember: "the crowd laughs with you always...but it will cry with you for only a day."
along with so much else here, something happens an hour in that left my mouth hanging wide open in shock, just a time-stopping moment...except that "the world can't stop because your baby's sick!" this movie is devastating lol.
the cynical view would be that Scott is just a tourist. he's an heir just trying on this life as a form of rebellion, and he only gets with guys when they're paying. i'm not saying this perspective isn't correct, but it's not so simple either. the campfire scene, as everyone else says, is just incredible and devastating, River Phoenix inverting his body after exposing his vulnerability. and you're going to tell me that Scott doesn't yearn to be with…
