One cannot deny the grainy image of a bald, pointy-eared, long-toothed and clawed Max Schreck is utterly terrifying. His cold, piercing stare could leave anyone either compelled or repulsed. But much of this viewing felt like homework rather than anything else. For long stretches I felt my own stare becoming vacant and my eyes wandered off far too many times for me to even try and regain interest in the events unfolding on screen.
Whether I liked it or not, it's safe to say I'm the least qualified person to pass judgment on a film that's nearly 100 years old.
