Busting manages to capture both the cartoonish excess of its more buddy cop contemporaries (Freebie and the Bean, The Super Cops) and the pop vigilantism-cum-institutional repudiation of Dirty Harry. Elliott Gould's usual detached smart ass persona and next-level facial hair temper the aimless morality that barely governs his and Robert Blake's detective work. Hyams' visual schema, with its ornate tracking/dolly work, reveals only enough space through which Gould/Blake rampage -- bureaucratic entanglements are made spatial.

Hits about as much of a sweet spot of taste for me as any detective action jam of the period.
