Last Night in Soho

lol. textually dire, faux-feminist slop. it's promising young woman part two but worse because it's directed by edgar wright. completely unchallenging. at best it's a flashy, vacant stylepiece (though that's largely front-loaded, as is the fun) and at worst an anti-sex, "women are crazy, man" creed. it's too clear that he's a nerd afraid of sex appeal and cuts it with the intention of making a political point. you can do both and plenty of directors have done it well! knew we were in for it when he decided to paint thomasin mckenzie's character as this pure, innocent soul and obviously solidified it with anya taylor-joy's arc. the ladies look very pretty, but they’re very poorly written and deserve better. he's so awful at building suspense; we felt nothing the entire time, and it’s all telegraphed, so it fails as a horror/thriller. some weirdly overt product placements, too? like multiple plot points centered on and shots prominently framing products like coke, coors light, etc. did he need the money or was that just for fun? mind-numbingly bad all around.
