Normally, I would not rate a short like this, but I have wanted to get Riefenstahl out of my top-rated directors for a while and so Day of Freedom provides a good excuse. Certainly, you can see some of the artistry that she would continue to develop as she got towards making Olympia. However, whereas in Olympia, the celebration is of the great athletes of the world presented at the peak of competition without much cinematic thought given to nationalism, and in fact my favorite part of the whole work is Jesse Owens humiliating Hitler, here the celebration is of the Nazi military taking part in an aimless set of drills to stroke the egos of the generals. The beginnings of what would soon become a great style simply is not good enough to make up for the subject, in this case.
