Bedevilled ★★★★

From Japan to Korea, Bedevilled is a remarkable drama that turns into an imposing and distressing horror. Seong-won Ji plays a young woman from Seoul who visits the small island she had once gone to with her grandparents. The fiercely patriarchal society that the inhabitants adhere keeps an old friend as a slave to her community, and physical and emotional victim to her husband and brother-in-law. What starts out as a slow, painful and beautifully photographed look at possession, power, enslavement, and abuse then turns into a revenge fantasy that packs more of an emotional punch than countless American horrors. Up there with the likes of Martyrs as an example of the very best of extreme world cinema horror, Bedevilled is another instance of the emergence of Korea as serious powerhouse in modern cinema
