As clumsy as it sophomoric, POLICE ACADEMY sure turned out to be quite a thing, huh? This gets a lot—and I mean a lot—of mileage out of that winning fanfare, which somehow makes a lot of this tolerable. Gutenberg is adequate, I suppose; a little charming, a little bland. George Gaynes is the MVP here, just being so gosh darn calm and likeable. The majority of the jokes don’t land, and aren’t very funny to begin with (oh and holy shit there are some pretty icky 1984isms at the expense of anyone that’s not a heterosexual white male). Except the blowjob gag, that is an all-timer.
