Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★½

Kong: Skull Island is the definition of a mixed bag.

I won't deny that there are some moments of visually pleasing imagery. Every time the movie focuses on Kong and other monsters it's actually quite a bit of dumb fun and the pacing isn't all that bad either.
And I really enjoyed John C. Reilly and his character.

But every other character is bland and one dimensional, despite the best efforts of the actors. Tom Hiddleston plays a generic lead protagonist and Brie Larson plays a generic female side-kick. It's about as exciting as me writing these lines.

The only other person in the whole movie that has something going for him is Samuel L. Jackson, but even he is very one note and his conclusion I thought was very weak and kind of lazy.

And while occasionally the movie looked stunning, there were also many instances of abysmal greenscreen and overexposed shots that looked very ugly. And I shouldn't forget the sometimes horrible editing.

Overall, Kong: Skull Island is a mess, but it's kind of an entertaining mess. I'm going with a 5/10, but I should note that it's closer to a 4 than a 6.
