I write about movies for a living. I never said I was good at it, but I love them. I help run a boutique arthouse movie theater in Oregon.

The most meta moment of my life happened this past weekend, and it was amazing. I went to the world premiere of "The Last Blockbuster," a movie that I'm in, about a dying form of entertainment, shown at a pop-up drive-in movie theater, which is in itself a dead form of entertainment, during a global pandemic when all movie theaters are hovering dangerously close to being extinct themselves.

The gay panic/transphobic section is very disappointing. I know he's trying to rail against political correctness and putting everyone into boxes, but it comes off a bit apologetic for homophobes. The special feels like prime Chappelle during his bits about O.J., Chris Tucker, Cosby and the police, but there's a weird air of social conservatism throughout the whole thing. A few genuinely great belly laughs, but not as many of those as there were uncomfortable winces at some out of touch jokes. Extra star for the Shandling and Phife tributes at the end.

Sorry, I'm gonna date myself real quick. One of the only times I ever skipped school was March 31 of my senior year when I took off during lunch to go to the first showing of "The Matrix" at my local theater. Yeah, I was a real troublemaker. I went into that movie expecting some badass action and kung-fu, but not the trippy, reality-bending carnival ride the film ended up being. By the time the film ended and I was…
