although some of the editing/pacing detracts from the central romantic progression, it's so visually stunning and captures intimately the anxiety of a life derailed and redefined. i can't imagine some of my favorite films – carol, cmbyn, brokeback mountain – being as beautiful and polished as they are without donna deitch's vision of a desire realized in restaurant booths and hotel rooms and the open spaces of the american west <3
