Scarface 1983
A story as old as story itself.
A man’s rise to power. A man’s fall from power.
Miami in the ‘80s is an inspired setting for that story. And the cast and crew assembled are some of the best in the biz. But this movie has never made the leap for me. It is solid. It is blunt. It is culturally iconic but to me it is never great. At its best it feels clipped and boxed in (even in the midst of such excess). At worst it is a time worn parody of itself.

Circle of Deceit 1981
About twenty, twenty-five minutes into Circle of Deceit , there is a shot of a Holiday Inn - a skyscraper punctured by armaments. From this high rise hotel, the camera pans across the smoky ruins of the city.
It was at that moment that I realized this wasn’t a movie made about the Lebanese Civil War, it was a movie made inside the Lebanese Civil War.
Schlondorff captures the constant drumming horror of war, as well as the struggle to find some normalcy or pleasure or productivity or even meaning in the middle of that chaos.
