AFTER EARTH is difficult for me to rate, because there are some really, really strong moments and some really high-powered suckage, but most of the time it simply hums along in comfortable mediocrity.
Jaden Smith is not a bad actor (I thought he was flat-out great in THE KARATE KID), but he's trying way too hard here by overacting up a storm, and that combined with his awkward attempt at a British accent (which is doubly confusing since no one else in his character's family has one) and his squeaky, pubescent voice make for an occasionally grating screen presence. But I remain confident that he will age into a solid actor.
As for the rest of the movie, despite some really imaginative flourishes and some effective sequences, it's decent at best and surprisingly hollow at its center. I'm fairly sure I would have loved it as a kid, though, so maybe that's the best audience for it.
