Jason Alley’s review published on Letterboxd:
An absolutely blast from start to finish! The animation is dazzling and some of the most beautiful and creative I’ve ever seen, and it’s hilarious and unique and clever through and through. Not just one of the best comic book movies ever, but also one of the best action fantasy films I’ve seen in a very long time.
There are a thousand other influences there, but it felt to me (in tone and feeling) kinda like AKIRA meets SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, with a touch of THE MAXX. That’s a heady brew, I know.
I talk a lot of shit about Marvel, and it’s still true that the majority of them feel too paint-by-numbers, but now there have been enough that are just great standalone movies (like this, BLACK PANTHER, and both GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movies) that I guess I should ease up a little and admit that there’s a lot more creative possibilities in the “universe” than I gave it credit for.
