Always lost in the conversation about the looming death of movie theatres and the theatrical experience is the small movie. The conversation always talks about the Imax action film or big laughs, and takes for granted that any movie that isn't "big" does not need to be seen on the big screen.

Minari is the poster child for why that view is bullshit. This specific, special story with its incredible family, moving story, beautiful and effecting score and wondrous cinematography…

Surely I can't deliver an unbiased review of this, as it was seemingly scientifically engineered in a lab to my personal taste specifications. Period and costume piece, backroom politicking, epic skulduggery and backstabbery, Yorgos' unmatched flare for revealing the transactional nature of all interactions and relationships, powerhouse actresses at the peak of their powers, DUCK RACES, Anglophilic, beautifully shot, acerbically hysterical and utterly bombastic.

And I loved every second of it. This was exactly the movie I wanted it to be. Pure bliss.

There's a moment (a somewhat early stint on the rowing machine) where the extra direction, the expressionistic style announces itself and to me it felt like it came out of nowhere, though certainly was not unwelcome.

Overall, it's a compelling film that excels at rendering the intensity of its lead character and its story believably on screen, and also imparting that same intensity. Both are admirable for a first-time filmmaker. And, for me, having not really seen much of Isabelle Fuhrman outside of that one minor Hunger Games appearance, it was surprising to see this level of performance.

Someone remind me of this film the next time I try to describe a different one as "unflinching."
