"There's a whole ocean of oil under our feet! No one can get at it except for me!"
Greed, family, ambition, destruction, horror, love, dead, power, revenge are some of the words to describe the themes of Paul Thomas Anderson 5th film. 'There Will be Blood' is impressive, beautifully shoot and amazingly frame, they surely don't make films like this often enough.
Jonny Greenwood soundtrack is electric, the melodies are hunting and unsettling, giving the film a unique personality, after all, we are talking about one of the talents of what I consider the best band in the world today 'Radiohead'. Is interesting how Paul Thomas Anderson took the decision of an original soundtrack, keeping in mind how important the use of pop music was in his previous films, certainly a man who evolves creatively.
Daniel Day-Lewis, what can I say? The man is in another level of acting, there is nothing I can write that would do justice to his performance of Daniel Plainview, a greedy, competitive son of a bitch, I should hate the guy, but Daniel Day-Lewis shows so many layers that I Am simply fascinated. Like I said, the man is giving a master class.
Is 'There Will be Blood' about corrupt American capitalism? Or the conflict between capitalism and religion? Or maybe the relationship between fathers and sons? I can't really answer those questions, but what I can say, 'There Will be Blood' is an epic story.
