There is a lot of talk of evil, evil being destroyed, evil dying tonight and so on. I came to the realization that this dialogue only works for me when Donald Pleasence delivers it. I will say this, the movie is brutal, gory and rather merciless in the way characters are treated. It certainly brings the slasher goods. And I liked the extended flashback to 1978. Unfortunately while Jamie Lee Curtis has her moments she doesn't get to do all…

Fun fact. Lance Guest has appeared in two 80's sequels to a 70's horror classic. This is the good one. While not as good as the 1978 original, I legitimately love this and still believe it is the best sequel in the series.*
Now I think the one main thing that is a step down is the way Laurie Strode is treated. Jaime Lee Curtis spends 80% of the movie barely conscious in a bad wig. And if this was…

This is not the only movie I have seen this year in which a French woman has a sexual relationship with an inanimate mechanical object. In this instance it is a car. Though unlike Jumbo, I do not believe Alexia is in love, it is just a one night stand. This is a well directed darkly humorous body horror that would do Cronenberg proud. It is also strangely moving due to the central relationship between Alexia and Vincent (who is…

Entertaining modern western/action thriller that takes place in the confines of an isolated police station. So yeah, it is mostly a riff on Assault on Precinct 13, but it is a well done riff. I am a fan of both Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo and they are good here. But the movie is elevated by two other actors. Alexis Louder gives what should be a star making turn as the movie's protagonist, displaying both charisma and some action hero chops. And Toby Huss just about steals every scene he is in as Lamb, one of my favorite villains in recent memory.

Time will tell but this may give Re-Animator a run for it's money as my favorite movie based on H.P Lovecraft's stories. This is Nicolas Cage's best performance since, well Mandy a couple of years ago. But he's been in roughly 100 forgettable movies between now and then. Yes, his crazy is dialed up to 15 (I expected him to start singing the alphabet) but there are also moments of true emotion. Joely Richardson is also good. It was nice…

Reading up on this movie, it is supposedly based in part on the works of William Shakespeare. It's been awhile since I have read any of those but I don't recall too many F-bombs being dropped. However, taken from the standpoint of being a medevial war/action movie I thought it was above average. And forget Batman. Robert Pattinson should be the new Inspector Clouseau.
