Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

The gay biker fashion aesthetic doesn't quite hold up (not even gay bikers dress like gay bikers anymore), but otherwise this is a near-perfect dystopian sci-fi action movie. It's essential viewing if you want to understand the visual vocabulary it has inspired in cinema for decades afterwards.

    John Wick: Chapter 2

Few movies are as efficient at being ass-kicking action movies as John Wicks 1 & 2 are. The plot is kept to a minimum and mainly serves to move the titular assassin from one action set piece to the next. And those set pieces: man, they're good.

Side note: I ended up basically watching this movie two days in a row because on the first day the theater was evacuated with only about 10 minutes left in the movie. (There was a fire at one of the stores in the mall.) It was no less fun watching it the second time.

    The Act of Killing

    ★★★★★

An absolutely brutal film. The casualness with which the most horrible of atrocities are treated by their perpetrators is truly shocking, especially for the fact that those perpetrators are shown as they are: three-dimensional, conflicted human beings. It's a fascinating and appalling study in how the human mind can rationalize doing terrible things, up to a point at least.
