Think my expectations were a tad too high for this one given the onslaught of acclaim, but this was good! Ensemble cast is wonderful (but several actors were pretty underused in favor of focusing on Craig’s and de Armas’ characters), the screenplay is pretty spot on with the humor despite some cringe jokes, and the mystery keeps you guessing for sure. I think the ending kind of tied everything up too perfectly for me? I was expecting some kind of double-reveal at the end but to no avail. I feel like several scenes in the film kind of required you to suspend your disbelief, everything sort of falls into place neatly which isn’t what I was expecting from a mystery / whodunit film. Typically I’d like to be continuously guessing until the end, but here I think the comedy/lighthearted nature of the film takes over and the ending is somewhat of an “easy way out”. I do wish the rest of the cast had more to work with here, there’s SO much talent that is really set aside. Besides a few red herrings in the very beginning, once the film hits its narrative arc, most of the cast becomes secondary observers to the “main plot”. I would’ve liked to see those red herrings developed more and had more back and forth between the primary suspects for the murder. But overall a really fun time and it’s clear the actors had a blast as well — definitely recommend!
