“This be an empty world without the Blues.”
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is 100% one of the best films of the year. The performances from Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis are their career bests in my opinion. There is only a few locations in this film and that could have been a detriment to the flow of the film but I felt it made it radiate with personality, being set in a for the most part one recording studio for the entire runtime.
While writing this I can just visualize and remember the feeling of watching this, you feel like your just as tense and hot as the characters get. With it being only in a couple locations it feels very play-like (I am aware it is based on a play) which I feel is an advantage for this film, which is filled with fantastic dialogue and a few unbelievable monologues. Chadwick definitely deserves an Oscar for the way he delivered two of what I felt are some of the most emotionally powerful scenes I’ve seen all year. Definitely check this one out.
