This was an interesting bungee jump into the whirlpool of modern media. With the explosion of documentary it's fun to watch one that tells the story of the story of a subject. I love a documentary that unfurls like a rug!

Fantastic tension throughout and some really fun performances. Also really exciting to watch this movie with the context of Tarantino's oeuvre because I constantly felt like anything could happen in the next scene (which is a particularly strange thing to feel when watching a movie where you ostensibly know the ending). Also, some of the best fake movies and tv shows I can recall!

Ten years of lucrative media trends have merged together into a massive intellectual property rogue wave whose scale has never been seen before and may never be seen again. My memories of this movie will have nothing to do with the film itself but rather with it's success in producing literal standing ovations, unanimous screams, and tears of joy from a packed theater of strangers. It is the season finale of an entire era of blockbuster cinema.

Watching this with the hindsight (or is it foresight?) of Miyazaki's oeuvre provides some wonderful hints for what's to come. In particular, I am struck by the sharp attention to imaginative detail, the dynamic clarity of action, and the relentlessly beautiful array of compositions for even the smallest of scenes. Despite the goofy plot and stock characters, it's still a movie I found myself daydreaming about afterwards.
