This film is an enigma. Nobody here is likable. Everybody is brooding and selfish with veiled motives and never an honest word or action. A lot of times, the screenplay doesn’t seem to make sense.
Still, there’s plenty I like about the movie. It evokes a strong sense of time and place, doing a fine job of capturing New York City in late 1956. Some of the sets have a nice mid-century modern feel. The performers are uniformly good. Perhaps…
