For the first two hours, I wondered what all the fuss was about. The Birth of a Nation seemed like a fascinating (though sometimes dull and overlong) portrayal of the Civil War from a Southern point of view. Then came the third hour. Ah…I see. That third hour is one long disturbing recruitment ad for the Ku Klux Klan. It’s unapologetically an ode to white supremacy.
So, yes, this is a deeply flawed film. Technically, it’s well ahead of anything…
