Simply put one of the most profoundly moving films I’ve ever seen. I love everything I’ve seen from Kurosawa, but this was so much more real to me. So much more raw. Perhaps it hits a little too close to home... a damn good thing, actually.
Watanabe swaying on the swing is an indelible film moment. The memories of people and our deeds, let alone those deeds and their doers themselves, are fleeting, not unlike melting snow. Kurosawa recognizes this and that’s where the film’s heartbreaking wisdom resides.
