Jen Caswell’s review published on Letterboxd:
A thoroughly engrossing watch. A slow burn that demands attention. An adaption of genre that goes beyond its conventions to complicate traditional themes by exploring the echoes of occupation and colonial remnants - from the social to the political to the economic.
There is a sense, albeit at times strained, of empathy throughout the film. Thanks to some on-point acting supported by assured, deft direction and editing, WESTERN offers a layered, character-driven film that weaves a compelling story of isolation and belonging.
I really enjoyed this film. Gorgeous.
