Jennifer’s review published on Letterboxd:
I saw Mary Poppins Returns this afternoon with my parents and my brother. It was delightful and whimsical! Just plain fun! And as Sarah Bessey said, it was earnest and sincere in its wonder, innocence, and joy, which is why it was so charming.
- Of course, I loved everything about Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt’s performances!
- I also enjoyed the cameos from Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury.
- I was disappointed that Julie Andrews did not make a cameo appearance, but I have to respect what she said about this movie being Emily’s show and she wanted it that way. She said “I don’t want it to be, “Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.” I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.’” (I read that in an article on EW.com)
- My favorite big ensemble song and dance number was “Trip a Little Light Fantastic”. My other favorite song was “A Cover is Not the Book”, not only because of the topic of books but because Lin-Manuel gets to do his Hamilton style rap in part of it.
