2046 ★★★★½

I had no idea that In the Mood for Love had a sequel. And naturally as soon as I found this out I immediately had to watch it. And while 2046 is not quite as painfully searing or urgent as its predecessor it's still a unique and beautiful work of art.

I've only seen a fraction of Wong Kar-wai's filmography but he's nonetheless become one of my all time favorite directors. He seems to understand the medium of film far better than most. The script defies typical narrative structure opting for something more dreamy and meditative instead. Everything is so perfectly and beautifully realized here. The colors, composition, editing, music, cinematography, set & costume design, and performances are flawless and create an astounding intimacy. This is a filmmaker who knows the power of silence and letting a moment breathe. His films could never translate to plays or novels. Like Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love, 2046 is a visual and emotional feast.

P.S. Any recommendations on what Kar-wai films I should watch next would be much appreciated.
