American Dharma ★★★

Morris has an approach in these single-subject political interview documentaries that involves largely staying out of the way of his interviewees as they hang themselves with their own logic. This works better this time out than before, partially because Bannon’s such a moron, spinning out arguments that range from contradictory, to sycophantic, to willfully blind. Morris scarcely has to underscore the problems with Bannon’s worldview here, and when he blatantly calls the man out, he has no formulated response, and merely changes the subject. The thing that is most revelatory is probably the degree to which Bannon’s mindset is revealed to be based largely in cinematic fantasies (plenty of supporting footage is offered). That these delusions have become the dominant political reality in America is probably why Morris described the film in his introduction as a “horror film.”
