Brawl in Cell Block 99 ★★★½

With a better lead actor, this crime thriller with an askew sense of justice could have been sensational. The freakishly tall Vaughn is a good physical fit for this part (the scene of him tearing up a car out of rage is absurdism at its finest), but as a performer he adds little else to a film that wants to fester a good long while before it retaliates. Zahler's measured pacing and his elaborate, Tarantino-style dialogue scenes are the prime attraction, then, beyond the film's matter of fact stance toward the ugliness of the world.
