Dark Money ★★★½

A rather strong and ruthlessly assembled political documentary about the American oligarchy’s attempts to stack the government and dismantle the free press, partially because it inspires the same increasing queasiness of a good horror film. The focus at the local level keeps things comprehensible, but the degree to which everyone on screen admits that addressing these issues at a national level is a lost cause is disheartening and alarming. Reed wants to present this as a non-partisan issue, presumably so right-wing audiences don’t immediately check out about an important undermining of democracy, but that false equivalence is disingenuous in its own way. Still, mostly worthy of the outrage that it inspires…
