Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool ★★

This flat drama about Gloria Grahame's last fling truly feels as if it's scraping the bottom of the biopic barrel. It combines a standard issue romance with an endless procession of deathbed scenes, neither of which are particularly illuminating nor specific. Bening has a few nice moments here, cooing her way through a role that at least has the decency to allow her to remain unlikeable, but one can't help but question why this story need be told at all, except perhaps to demonstrate that women, too, can star in films about creepy May-December romances.
