If Beale Street Could Talk ★★★

Quietly moving and immaculately made, yet somewhat bereft of the expected outrage by its end, which is surprising because its early scenes, such as a confrontation between two families that are finding out that they’ll become one, suggest that Jenkins could opt for more than wise resignation if he wanted to. There’s a slow, steady hand controlling what we see here and if I wasn’t as consistently overcome with emotion as many early viewers seem to have been, one or two scenes got me where it counts… Regina King is the standout among an uneven cast of performers.
