Racer and the Jailbird ★★

Surprisingly muddled relationship drama that initially presents itself as a heist film but slowly and steadily morphs into a moral lesson about taking personal responsibility. Roskam's The Drop stands as evidence that he's more than capable of turning out a conventional crime thriller, but this very European take on the "one last job" drama is far more interested in the dawning maturity of its protagonist (Schoenaerts). This is to the film's detriment, as the highlights are clearly those that depict action (a single-take highway robbery especially) while the romance plot grows increasingly absurd (deals with gangsters, secret hideouts, cancer, etc...).
