The Dark Tower ★★½

This critically drubbed King adaptation feels almost like a deliberate throwback to an abandoned subgenre of 1980s children’s adventure films (e.g. The Neverending Story, Labyrinth). As such, it feels more akin to the King/Straub novel The Talisman than any of the Dark Tower books that I read as a kid. One gets the impression that a bit more imagination and visual inspiration could have made this material sing. What remains is perfunctory and never boring, but too straightforward to ever inspire a sense of wonder or fear.
