The Falling ★★★

Teen girl hysteria is treated as both a mystery and a means of liberation in this beguilingly noncommittal film from Carol Morley. The longer that it extends its sense of mystery, the more that it seduces. Morley’s refusal to explain away the girls’ ecstatic bouts and her formal means of expressing them are both clear assets here. Unfortunately, the film takes a swerve toward the bathetic in its final reel, setting the mystery aside entirely to provide an unearned emotional catharsis.
