Toni Erdmann ★★★

Given that this is a two-and-a-half hour character study, it's amazing how incoherent the characters are. Reading about Ade's absurdly high shooting ratio seems to explain a lot of the issues I had with the film the first time that I saw it. Fundamental plot events (e.g. Ines' decision to go along with her father's ruse) are still somewhat obscure to me. That the film nonetheless features two of the year's standout performances is a true testament to the performers. At least I laughed a little more this time out...
