    The Battery

    ★★★

    "Tomorrow we die."

Feeling like the Easy Rider (1969) of zombie movies, The Battery features some compelling character dynamics but ends up taking a long and overly winding road to a pretty dark destination. At least it avoids the obvious route and smooths out the ride with scenic stops and an inspired soundtrack.

"This is as far as you go. No more, this is it."

Prey is a clear study in how to reboot a franchise. With a refreshingly gorgeous setting, smooth score, suitably gory choreography, and an excellent lead in Amber Midthunder, this is a true standout for horror prequels.

Could've ditched the crappy CGI though. Filmmakers truly need to bring back practical effects and animal puppets.

"You're talking about pinball machines. I'm a politician!"

As a sprawling coming of age story that successfully captures all the awkward moments and unnecessary drama, Licorice Pizza is a little lacking in cohesion and has some problematic elements, but rises quite high with excellent cinematography, a sharp script, and outstanding lead performances.

Needed much more Bradley Cooper, though.

    ★★★★

"Jesus, what the fuck! I mean...what the fuck! I ask you for help and you give me these clues that don't mean anything!"

Firmly nailing atmosphere and tension while traversing some familiar routes, The Black Phone's well-structured narrative and stellar cast make for a generally solid horror feature.
